Are Class 4 impact-resistant shingles worth the extra cost in Texas?
For many North Texas homeowners, yes. A Class 4 shingle passes the UL 2218 test, where a two-inch steel ball is dropped on it twice in the same spot without cracking it. It usually costs about ten to twenty percent more than a standard architectural shingle, and many Texas insurance companies offer a premium discount for it. On an insurance claim with NTX Roofing Solutions, we offer a free upgrade to a higher impact-resistant shingle when the deductible is paid up front or financed.
What the rating means
UL 2218 is a lab test for impact resistance. Steel balls of different sizes are dropped onto shingle samples, twice in the same spot, and a shingle passes if it does not crack. A two-inch ball dropped from about twenty feet earns Class 4, the highest rating. Smaller balls dropped from lower heights correspond to Classes 1 through 3.
Many impact-resistant shingles use rubberized or polymer-modified asphalt. Most major manufacturers offer one, and they look like standard architectural shingles from the street.
What it costs
Impact-resistant shingles cost more than standard shingles, while the labor to install them is about the same. On a full roof, the difference is usually around ten to twenty percent over a standard architectural shingle.
Insurance discounts
Many Texas insurance companies offer a discount on the wind and hail portion of a homeowners premium for a Class 4 roof. Discounts often range from about ten to thirty percent of that portion, depending on the carrier and location. Ask your insurance agent for the exact amount before you choose your shingle.
Things to know
Some carriers pair the discount with a cosmetic damage exclusion, which means dents that do not affect how the roof performs are not covered. Read your policy or ask your agent.
An impact-resistant shingle still needs a sound installation, including good decking, underlayment and flashing, to protect your home.
